Artists Recital Series @ Ascension – Adam Z

  • Church of the Ascension 1723 North Bryant Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55411 United States (map)

Tenor and composer Adam Zahller and friends will present his new work, “In Our Attentive Ears,” in the sanctuary following mass.

Doors open at 12:45pm, and the concert starts at 1:00pm.

This work consists of a series of short movements: 5 movements featuring voices and piano, with brief instrumental interludes that surround them such that there is no pause for the entire duration. Source texts come from early America: fragments from Rhode Island founder Roger Williams' 1643 bilingual phrasebook "A Key Into the Language of America," and a haunting phrase from Powhatan's speech to Captain John Smith as recorded in "Proceedings of the English Colony in Virginia" (1609). Musical material is drawn in part from the shape-note hymn "New Plymouth", with words by Tate and Brady, which include the phrase that became this piece's title, "In Our Attentive Ears."
