When one considers the history of Latin America, the courage, faith, and resilience of its people are truly miraculous. This program brings together music by Calixto Álvarez, Beatriz Bilbao, and Osvaldo Golijov that highlight a unique religious and musical syncretism of Indigenous, African, and European cultures.

Oceana
“Oceana” is a reinvention of the Bach cantata form for a modern age by the celebrated Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. It is a prophetic work, setting texts by Pablo Neruda where “crashing waves have disappeared, the seas and the songs of travelers have passed away.”

Border CrosSing continues its holiday tradition of performing Navidad Nuestra by Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez, first performed by the ensemble in 2017 alongside a bilingual version of Handel’s Messiah. This year’s program pairs Navidad Nuestra with Baroque villancicos from Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru, which will be performed in Spanish and the Indigenous language Nahuatl.
